Elif Leyal Uğraş

I’m Elif Leyal Uğraş, a medical student, researcher, and aspiring physician with a deep interest in the human mind and the stories it carries. I study at Bezmialem Vakıf University, based in the beautiful city of Istanbul, where I engage with both the scientific and ethical dimensions of medicine.

I have delivered presentations on various topics in national and international conferences, organized academic events, and contributed to projects that explore the intersections of science, medical education, and cross-cultural understanding.

Outside of medicine, I’m a writer, runner, and lifelong traveller.

Experience

Invited to 2nd International Symposium of the UNESCO Chair on Science Diplomacy and Scientific Heritage on “Scientific Legacy as People's Heritage” organized in Mexico City. Presented a paper entitled "The Timeless Wisdom of Rhazes: A Legacy Reimagined for Contemporary Medicine” as being the youngest and only Turkish presenter.

10/2024 – 11/2024

Interned in cardiothoracic surgery department of Assiut Medical School University Hospital and supported to the operation room staff when needed. Responsibilities include: Attending clinical hours under the supervision of doctors, taking the patient history (anamnesis), sterilization of the surgical equipment, suturing.

Egypt Assiut University | Internship

Gave a presentation entitled “Cross-Stress Resistance in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Cells” in Rzeszow International Medical Students Association (RIMSA) Congress 2024 and awarded with the 2nd place among more than 120 presentations. Attended lectures made by Professors from Poland and from whole Europe. Took part in workshops such as “Principles of Electrocardiography”.

03/2024 – 04/2024

Worked as a voluntary laboratory assistant and involved in a research project about Cystic Fibrosis. Conducted experiments, wrote two research papers and supported to the laboratory staff when needed. Responsibilities include: Collection and preparation of samples for analysis, organization of the laboratory environment and maintenance of technical equipment.

11/2024 – 12/2024

60+ hours of shadowing with physicians from various medical specialities such as cardiology, gynecology, ophthalmology, nephrology, orthopedics and so on. Highlights of the experience include: attending surgeries, observing physicians examining the patients, discussing the possible diagnosis with the doctor, engaging with patients with the instructions of the nurses.

01/2023 – 02/2023

Designed a project after attending Data Science and Python bootcamp. Analyzed several datasets using various libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn, PyTorch etc. Mastered the core principles of machine learning and deep learning as an attemp to understand the latest advencements.
